PAT Testing

Appliances that need “PAT” testing are classed as portable; for an appliance to be portable it needs to be able to be moved whilst connected or disconnected from the mains power supply; it can be portable by a person holding it, or an industrial crane.

Another way to describe portable appliances are those that are fitted with a plug or intended to be used with a plug fitted; this includes appliances where the plug has been removed and the unit has been wired directly into the mains supply (the appliance is fixed).

You are not required by law to carry out portable appliance testing but you are required to carry out periodic inspections and tests on portable appliances to make sure they’re maintaining safe standards – the portable appliance test is the most recognised method for doing this.
